TUKS WRESTLING CONTINUES TO DOMINATE
SOUTH AFRICAN WRESTLING

TuksWrestling ended the 2009 season in spectacular fashion winning no less than ten
Gold Medals at the South African Senior and Age Group Championships.

This achievement rounded off one of TuksWrestling’s best years ever confirming its status as the country’s top wrestling club. At the end of a season of national and international competition TuksWrestling has produced:
  • Three participants at the World Senior championships in Denmark – Heinrich Barnes, Gerald Meyer and Etienne van Huyssteen.
  • An African Junior Champion – Zumicke Geringer
  • Four silver medals at the African Senior Championships – Pieter Pienaar, Gerald Meyer and Etienne van Huyssteen – in both the Freestyle and Greco-Roman categories.
  • Five members of the Senior Protea Team – Heinrich, Gerald, Pieter and Zumicke.
  • Five Junior Proteas – Zhuan Broodryk, Cobus Coetzee, Zumicke Geringer, Louis Minnaar, and Nhlankanipo Shongwe and one member of the SA Cadet Team (Danie Odendaal.)
  • A World Masters Champion – Willem Putter achieving this for the fourth time in five years.
  • 21 National Champions
  • 9 Silver and 11 Bronze medals at National championships.
“These achievements can be attributed to the skills and dedication of our coaching staff, the hard work of our wrestlers and the commitment of our administrative staff, officials, team manager and parent community,” says the Chairman of TuksWrestling, Webber Marais.
The coaching staff is headed by former Springbok and Protea wrestler, Bennie Labuschagne, who also represented South Africa at the 1992 Olympic Games. “But, there are more than 15 coaches on our roster, each one of them making a unique contribution towards the development of our wrestlers and the success of our club,” says Marais.
Etienne van Huyssteen (97kg) continued his domination of South African Senior Wrestling with another emphatic victory at the national championships. One weight division down (84kg) Gerald Meyer scored his first national senior title following an illustrious career in the junior ranks.
Despite sitting out most of the year because of study and work commitments Bennie Labuschagne and Estiaan Louw won silvers while Louis Minnaar and Roelf Odendaal came third.
Five of the seven national age group champions are first time winners – Herkie Coetzee, Ruan Botha, Christiaan Schultz, Ulrich Benade and Paul Teitge. The remaining two, Reynhardt Louw and Dylon Marais have been almost untouchable in their division over the past five years.
Henry and Marnus Linde, Joshua Botha and Louis Minnaar came second. The Boshoff brothers, Jos, Jes and Immanuel, as well as Raynard de Wet, Heinrich Meyer, Brand de Villiers and Zhuan Broodryk returned from the competition held in Cape Town with bronze medals.
At provincial level TuksWrestling remains untouchable in Gauteng North, the strongest wrestling province in the country. Tuks, and its predecessor, Menlyn Wrestling Academy has won the title for the top club now for 11 years in row. This year it also accumulated the team trophies in the following categories: Under-8, 9, 10, 11, Junior, Senior, Presidents and Greco Roman.
Tuks also won the Provincial League for the 10th time in 11 years. Such is Tuks’ dominance on the wrestling mat that many of the other clubs in the province now prefer not to take part in this prestigious competition and face certain defeat. The exception this year was Reitz Wrestling Club who participated in the spirit of good sportsmanship and bravery – two of the qualities that characterise the sport of wrestling across the world.
The following list sets out the achievements of Tuks’ wrestlers in 2009 :

TUKS WRESTLING
 INCENTIVES FOR INTERNATIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS
 August 2008

The management of TuksWrestling provides financial support for its wrestlers who represent South Africa in international competition. TuksWrestling currently supplies a significant portion of wrestlers who represent South Africa at Senior, Junior and Cadet levels and in many cases they receive very little financial support from the National and Provincial bodies.

The following contributions are suggested. Please note that all awards are also dependent on a wrestler's contribution and partipation in club affairs and tournaments. Awards processed at the end of each year and creditted to accounts:

  • International participation, tours etc – R2 500 per tour.
  • Top-10 place World Championships – R2 500 bonus
  • Medal at World Championships – additional R2 500 bonus
  • Medals at African championships – Gold R1 500; Silver R1 000 and Bronze R500.
  • Wrestlers included in team to Olympic Games – R5 000.
  • Officials, coaches and team managers that accompany national teams – R2 500.
 Important notes:

  • Contributions will only be made to wrestlers whose club fees are settled (training and tournament fees). For wrestlers who owe Tuks Wrestling money the contribution will be used to settle outstanding debts and the remainder is paid out to the wrestler.
  • Loans to a maximum of R7 500 will be made for international participation. Agreements will be drawn up for such loans including monthly debit orders.
  • These decisions are applicable from 1 January 2008.
  • TuksWrestling has a policy to support its wrestlers where possible to enable them to participate and excel at international level. Money raised through sponsorships or fund-raising events (e.g. golf days) are being used to support our wrestlers.
TuksWrestling expects the following from wrestlers who receive financial support:

  • Participation in tournaments as determined by coaches – national and provincial championships, provincial opens and AA-events, Tuks Open.
  • Wearing of Tuks tracksuits, singlets and T-shirts at all events.
  • Contribution towards coaching and official duties (where possible).
Tuks Bursaries:

Full-time student wrestlers at the University of Pretoria are in line for bursaries from the University. The recipients and amounts are determined by TuksSport in consultation with the Wrestling club.

Gymnasium:

All student wrestlers can access the gymnasiums at the University’s sports grounds for free. Attendance is monitored and inactive wrestlers will be removed from the gym list.

Officials:

Officials (including administrative staff) who represent Tuks at tournaments will receive the following contributions:

  • Graded officials (1 X 7 wrestlers) – R120 per tournament
  • Learner officials (1 X 3 wrestlers) – R80 per tournament
  • All costs for officials’ courses and exams are paid for by the Club.
 Coaches:

  • Coaching duties at tournaments are included in the existing contributions for coaches.
  • Advances in coaches’ gradings will result in amendments to the contributions paid.

This is an important start to a process in which TuksWrestling wants to supports its wrestlers and officials. As the club’s finances grow the contributions will be adjusted.
